Persimmon Tarte Tatin

I'm dreaming about a real fall- the kind where leaves turn shades of orange and red, and fall off trees-the kind of fall where I need to wear a sweater to protect me from the cool breeze and light wind. We are now at the end of October and I'm worried that here in Israel, we will have completely missed the fall, or that we won't have a winter- just a fall. This time of year I usually start to change my cooking routine to fit the changing season- I start cooking warmer, cozier dishes, comfort food dishes with the rich seasonal produce of these supposedly cool months. One of the seasonal fruits, persimmon, has started making its appearance in the markets. I love persimmons, and I thought it would be a great fruit to use for a dessert to celebrate Halloween. I have a great recipe for the classic tarte tatin that I tweaked a bit and used persimmons instead of the typical apple filling. The first time I made this tarte I stood patiently by the oven waiting to see how the beautifully orange...

Cherry Tomato Jam, a Baby Shower Gift

By: Deanna Linder I can categorize my life into two main time periods. Before Israel and After Israel.  "Before Israel" consists of the 21 years I spent in the United States and the "After Israel" is made up of the past 7 years, since I moved. In general, these two time periods are characterized very differently. The "Before Israel" can be distinguished by what many Israelis would call an "American movie"- similar to what non-Americans see in the movies and consider reality. The "After-Israel" has been exceptionally different, as I'm sure one could imagine (for example, as I'm writing this now the background noise is chickens in their hens waiting for breakfast). Every so often, when I go back to the States to visit my family, I also revisit the "American movie". On my recent trip back, this movie contained a scene which involved a baby shower. Baby showers, in general are unheard of Israel. For those that don't know, a baby shower is a party to celebrate the pending birth of a child,...

The Creation of the "Culinary Guide to Tel Aviv"

I got back yesterday from a 5 day trip in Barcelona. It's the first time (Oded and I) have been abroad without the kids. It was absolutely amazing, obviously. I have so much to share about the food, so be prepared for an upcoming post on the topic. But now, I have a new post that has come to mind and I need help from our readers and foodies alike to help me create the "Tel Aviv Culinary Tourist's Guide". The idea came to me on the plane ride back from Barcelona, when I thought to myself that I could've enjoyed the food there even more had I received advice from a local foodie. It's not like I arrived in the city without any restaurant recommendations, but I would've really appreciated a hand in not falling into the tourist traps. So I started imagining what kind of tour I would give to a tourist coming to visit Tel Aviv; what I would definitely stay away from, what information I would give so that the tourist could really understand my city, Tel Aviv-Yaffo, from a culinary view. So what...

Toad in the Hole for Grown-Ups

By: Deanna Linder When I was about eight years old, I decided to open a restaurant. It was called "Harrold's", and I have no idea where I got that name. The restaurant was located in my parents' kitchen and it consisted of one item on the non-existent menu: French toast with my "famous" secret sauce which was a very simple concoction of sugar, cinnamon and maple syrup. I had two clients who frequented the restaurant, my mom and my dad, and I must say they were very loyal. Funny how my older "too cool" brother decided he didn't want to dine at my restaurant now begs me to cook when I'm home visiting. One day I got very upset at one of my loyal clients, my dad, after he asked if he could give me a kiss following his delicious meal. I angrily stated that restaurant goers typically don’t kiss the waitress/cooks, and being so distraught that I wasn't being taken seriously, "Harrold's" decided to close its doors for good. There is something about breakfasts that to this day remind me of my...

Tapioca Inspired by Aluma Fashion

By:  Danya Weiner Aluma Neck Piece  2010 Collection I have an old friend, since the age of 2, who throughout the years has come in and out of my life, but I seemed to always know two things about her: 1. She's the most talented person I know and 2. We would always be friends. One enlightened morning I thought to myself that we should collaborate somehow through this blog. My friend is an extremely talented fashion designer, celebrating a year now of her line of the same named after her- "Aluma". She started her line in 2001 in London, where she sold to high-end stores such as Selfridges and Harrods. Since her return to Israel, she and her business partner, Karin, opened their first store in the trendy Bazel area in the center of Tel Aviv. Aluma's clothes are almost always adorned with hand-made stitching, embroidery, lace and appliqués which make each piece one of a kind. In the past year Aluma has accomplished the unthinkable- giving birth and raising twins, and starting a fashion...
