Chicken Satay

By: Deanna Linder It’s a pretty common occurrence to hear a song and have it remind you of something, somewhere or someone. For foodies like me, a certain food does the same. There are the obvious, like chicken soup reminding me of my mother, French toast reminding me of my childhood and oysters, oddly enough, bring me back to Las Vegas. Chicken satay will always make me think of my older brother. Two years older than me, half a world away and still my best friend, my brother is what I like to call a “raw foodie”. He’s not into the snobby part that comes along with the title, but really a lover of simple, authentic flavors and tastes. He knows all the best ethnic ‘hole-in-the walls’ from taco truck to Indian spot in Los Angeles. Chicken is so unpretentiously his favorite protein. Satay is marinated, skewered and grilled meats found all throughout South East Asia, especially in Indonesia and Thailand. They are generally served with a sauce, and every time I’ve eaten Thai...

Danya's New Website www.danyaphoto.com

Already in my second year of college, I knew I wanted to be a food photographer. Many of my acquaintances were quite skeptical, and gave me the feeling that my chances were slim. “There are no women in that line of work”, “It’s hard to get a name for yourself”, “Why be so specific”, were the comments I was used to getting. But it’s what I felt I would be best at, so I went for it. My first real breakthrough in the field came when I created my previous website. With a friends help, it was up and running in 2003, and I didn’t have much material to publish, or important clients to brag about, but the pictures looked good and I was proud of it. The website opened up a lot of doors for me, and I felt it was a means of self-advertising without having to go meetings with my portfolio in hand. Throughout the years I updated the site, adding pictures, and changing the site according to my professional development, but in the past few months I just knew it was time for a real change....

Lavash Labane Pizza

By: Danya Weiner There are just those days when I really don’t have the energy to make dinner, when I wish my kids would say to me “Don’t sweat it mom, were good with having some cucumbers…”That doesn’t happen. Every day I work with food, and come home, ironically, to an empty fridge. I am proud to say that I have mastered the task of making something out of nothing-to scrape the bottom of the fridge for goods and end up making a hearty dinner (which sometimes is just a good old omelet-I’m not super mom after all). The idea for this pizza came from a recently published cookbook in Israel, “Al Hashuchan Express”. There are several recipes in the book which were created out of moments like I just described-where you just don’t have the energy for a complicated meal. As an admirer of authentic Arab flavors, I took the idea from the book and combined it with Eyal Shany’s focaccia (served with tomatoes and chili peppers) and a traditional Druze pita (served with labane...

The Original Los Angeles Farmers Market

By: Deanna Linder I love to shop. I admit it. I’ve been this way for as long as I can remember myself. I just recently got back from one of my annual L.A. trips, and while I was there, one of my first stops was at L.A’s uber-trendy outdoor shopping center, The Grove. I was there for a purpose- to pick out a bridesmaids dress at Jcrew for one of my best friends (and avid Matkonation reader) wedding, this summer. I had a mission to get the dress, and had to make that my first stop, but on the way there were so many of my favorite stores, that I already made a map in my head of which ones I was going to hit up… Pottery Barn Kids, Anthropology and obviously Nordstrom. Something strange happened after I got the dress. My mom and I were hungry so headed on over to The Original Los Angeles Farmers Market, which is connected to the shopping center. It was there I learned that my love for food, has now trumped my love for shopping. Walking around the farmers market, I was a cross between a...
