Chocolate and Salted Caramel Cake

By: Deanna Linder Danya and I have worked together on several productions for the Israeli culinary magazine, Al Hashulchan, but when they asked us to do an article that would feature us as Matkonation, we were thrilled and honored. The assignment was to shoot and style an article for the November (chocolate) issue. The concept was four baking blogs, each featuring their most delicious recipe for a chocolate cake. Danya let me run wild with my more American style of cake, a layered one, while she balanced it out with the idea of salted caramel. The shoot ended up being a fun day of meeting (or re-meeting) some of Israel’s most talented bloggers (all in Hebrew): Chen from Metukim Sheli, Natalie from Oogio.net and Inbal from the Cookie Fairy. A big thanks to Inbal from Mom & Me Homemade for the beautiful aprons I used to style the ladies for the shoot.   We think that the combination of chocolate and salted caramel goes perfect with this cake. The salted caramel balances out...

I Can Photograph Too (on Instagram)

By: Deanna Linder     When I was a sophomore in high school I had an amazing photography teacher who got me hooked. I was so passionate with the subject that I set up a darkroom in my bathroom and ended up starting college as an Art Major, hoping to continue in the field of photography. Somewhere down the line things took a major turn.  I got a degree in International Relations, moved to Israel, worked in research, until finding my way back to the world of photography, but this time as a stylist. Danya, the one who is responsible for the beautiful photography on this blog, has recently been a bit out of commission for the best reason, the birth of her beautiful third son. Before the birth she gave me a short lesson on shooting with my camera, and she was confident that I could do some shoots on my own. Wrong. But what I can do is Instragram. It makes me feel like I’m a photographer again. Here are some of my Instagram rules: I only post photos that I think are of good quality....

Saturday Morning at the Beach and Borscht

By: Danya Weiner Last Saturday I woke up at six in the morning and looked at the sky. After a stormy night, the white clouds and rays of sun signaled to me that my plans to join a group of men for their breakfast on the beach were still on.  I know it may sound like some weird plans for a married mother of two but there is an interesting story behind it. A few weeks ago I asked my uncle, Josie, about to tell me all about his “Saturdays on the Beach”. For years now I know my uncle has been meeting with a group of his friends, all men, on the beach in Herzilya every Saturday and having a feast. I decided it was time to see what this was all about. Twenty eight years ago- yes 28!- a guy named Gideon Ackerstein sat on the beach after a run and had a snack of pickled herring with two of his friends who lived in Herzilya. Gideon knew my uncle from work and he asked him to join along one day, for a shot of vodka and some pickled herring after a run.  They started making it a weekly habit,...

Food Photography and Styling Course- Conclusion

Two weeks ago, all of the participants of our food photography and styling course got together at 8’oclock at night at Danya’s studio for our concluding session. Everyone brought a little something to eat and before we got down to business, we sat down for a lovely potluck meal. Nothing like a good meal to end a successful food photography and styling course. During our dinner, each participant shared her experience and thoughts on the course, and the reservations about beginning the post-course process of shooting on their own. The concluding session was very exciting. Together we looked at each participants’’ photos, and we were able to identify each of their development as the course progressed. Each one really developed her own style that could immediately be recognized. It was obvious, through their photographs that each of these women have a true passion for food photography. From our experience, we were left extremely proud of their accomplishments, and there is no better...
