Paris Luck

One sunny winter fall morning a few months ago, Danya and I were having a business meeting regarding an upcoming project, when they guy we were having the meeting with mentioned that he was going to Paris in February for an international cookbook festival. Danya looked at me. Paris. Cookbook festival. You and me. She didn’t have to even say the words out loud. Within days we had the whole thing booked. Flight, check. Apartment, check. The last thing I had to do to prep for the trip was to do research in the culinary department. (Those that know me well enough know that I’m not the kind to fly to Paris without an exact culinary itinerary). My work life and personal life were so hectic in the few weeks leading up to the trip that I didn’t have the time to do the proper research. Literally three days before the flight, I found a hole in my busy schedule and sat on the computer to research away. Once I had the document ready with all the relevant information (restaurant names, addresses,...

NYC Must-Eat: 5 Places Not to Miss

By: Deanna Linder It started way back, even before we were in Preschool. I obviously don’t recall the actual meeting, but it’s been told to us that we met when our brothers, two years our senior, started Preschool. We had Israeli parents (me one, them two), which can be an automatic friendship maker over in Suburbia, LA. The twins (Donna and Shelly) and I shared the wonderful years of Preschool until 2nd grade together as BFF’s. I don’t remember the feelings of me, the six year old who lost her two best friends to the other side of the country, but I can assume it wasn’t easy. Years went by without contact, and then one summer when I was twelve, on our family trip back East, we met up again and after so many years it was like not even a mere second had gone by. And since that summer back in 93’, that’s exactly how our friendship is defined. No matter how much time has gone by, usually months or years at a time, we somehow still love the same things, from fashion to travel...

Chocolate and Salted Caramel Cake

By: Deanna Linder Danya and I have worked together on several productions for the Israeli culinary magazine, Al Hashulchan, but when they asked us to do an article that would feature us as Matkonation, we were thrilled and honored. The assignment was to shoot and style an article for the November (chocolate) issue. The concept was four baking blogs, each featuring their most delicious recipe for a chocolate cake. Danya let me run wild with my more American style of cake, a layered one, while she balanced it out with the idea of salted caramel. The shoot ended up being a fun day of meeting (or re-meeting) some of Israel’s most talented bloggers (all in Hebrew): Chen from Metukim Sheli, Natalie from Oogio.net and Inbal from the Cookie Fairy. A big thanks to Inbal from Mom & Me Homemade for the beautiful aprons I used to style the ladies for the shoot.   We think that the combination of chocolate and salted caramel goes perfect with this cake. The salted caramel balances out...

The Best Banana Bread

Deanna and I disagree over and over again in regards to recipes we post on the blog. Deanna likes classic recipes-finding the absolute best recipe of something classic to post. I, on the other hand, always say to her “so, where’s the catch here?” “what makes this recipe special/different?”. She usually gets annoyed with me and tells me that not every recipe needs a special twist. Actually, Deanna’s right. When I think about the recipes I use over and over and over again, I understand that those recipes tend to always been classics without any sort of manipulation. I know that it is our responsibility to provide our readers with the best possible recipe for a food we love. It was this reason which led me on a search for THE best banana bread recipe. I’ve been making banana bread for years now, but I still haven’t found the perfect recipe-not too dry, not too oily, not too sweet. In light of our extremely popular Carrot Cake post, I decided to go back to the amazing book...
